A Marathon Effort

We start this quarter's newsletter with a huge thank you to Claire Raftery, who has raised an incredible £2,435 for the Trust.

Claire ran the Edinburgh Marathon on 25 May, for a very special reason:

"My close friend's son Oscar passed away aged four after being diagnosed with cancer at 19 months old. He had Li Fraumeni Syndrome. The George Pantziarka TP53 Trust helped my friends during Oscar's illness in providing information about clinical trials and support."

"The charity helped provide answers to the many questions they had around the diagnosis. When deciding I wanted to raise money in Oscar’s memory, the Trust was the perfect choice."

Another £500 was added to the donation by the law firm Clyde & Co, where Claire works as a partner.

LFS UK is returning for 2025 on Saturday 13 September - entry is free but please do make sure to book your tickets now, so we know how many are attending.

We'll once again be hosting the event at International Student House in London, where lunch and refreshments will be provided, while an informal get-together will take place in the cafe-bar afterwards.

The full programme can be seen below, featuring an Open Mic session to end the day, where questions can be asked and discussions held. If you already have questions in mind, please do reply to this email and we will add them to the agenda.

We're hoping to hear from lots of you! Book your tickets using the button below.

Dragonfly TV are making a Channel 4 documentary looking at remarkable developments in cancer research science across the country - part of the series will look at people currently on the MILI trial.

This new series will showcase how we are entering a golden age of cancer research, with technological advancements like DNA sequencing and personalised medicine allowing scientists to develop new ways to detect, treat and prevent cancer like never before.

The documentary will be broadcast on Channel 4 later this year. It could also be showed internationally. Dragonfly TV are known for making medical documentaries like Surgeon’s at the Edge of Life (BBC Two), 13 series of Ambulance (BBC One) and One Born Every Minute (Channel 4).

Meet the Trustees

In this section we'll get to know one of our trustees a little better - this time we're speaking to the Addie Brady Foundation's Michelle Brady.

How did you get involved at the Trust?

My journey with the Trust began during my daughter Addie's illness in 2017. It was through the Trust that Addie and I attended the first youth workshop in Salt Lake City. This provided Addie, then 16, a precious opportunity to connect with other young people living with LFS. Tragically, we lost Addie a short time after that trip.

What does your role at the Trust entail?

Addie's symptoms were brutal, yet her courage never wavered. Driven by grief and inspired by her "lionheart bravery," we established the Addie Brady Foundation. Our primary mission is to support the vital work of the George Pantziarka TP53 Trust and we also collaborate closely with The Brain Tumour Charity.

What do you enjoy most about working with the Trust?

Losing Addie left a profound void in my life, particularly as my eldest daughter, Skylar, had just left for university. I was a full-time mum to two teenage girls, and suddenly, my sense of purpose was shaken. Finding comfort among those who had known Addie, I became determined to channel my grief into something positive. While we couldn't bring Addie back, I have found renewed purpose in helping others and offering guidance to families navigating similar challenges.

What is your greatest accomplishment?

That's easy: my girls, Skylar and Addie.

What do you do in your spare time?

I enjoy staying active, regularly going to the gym and running. I've completed the London Marathon three times, always as a fundraiser, of course! I also love walking my dog and when time allows, indulging in creative pursuits. Travel is another passion and I make an effort to explore new places whenever possible. Above all, I cherish the moments I spend with my family and friends. Two years ago, my daughter Skylar and I joined a book club. While initially a way to encourage her to read more, I've come to genuinely enjoy it. The best part is that whoever chooses the book also picks a new restaurant or café in London for our meet-ups – it's a fantastic way to discover new spots!

What are you reading at the moment?

The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah.

Treatment & Research Databases

We're thrilled to announce that the Trust has taken over the hosting, curation and further development of three excellent scientific databases.

Previously run by Belgian charity The Anticancer Fund, these databases are directly accessible to patients and medical professionals and are the only databases of their kind in the world; used to:

1. Find which drugs are approved for the treatment of specific cancers

2. Find repurposed drugs being used in clinical trials for specific cancers

3. Find which non-cancer drugs are future candidates for repurposing

These amazing resources are being co-funded by The George Pantziarka Trust and The Addie Brady Foundation and can be accessed via the link below.

We now plan on adding more databases in the future, so keep your eyes peeled!

The trust survives thanks to your ongoing support - we couldn't do it without you.
